Application to subscriptions

When creating a promotion for a product, it is important to define how the promotion should affect subscriptions.

In APIO, there are two possible application scenarios, both supported by the platform.

New Subscriptions Only

In this scenario:

  • The promotion applies only to new subscriptions
  • Existing subscriptions keep their current pricing
  • The promotion is evaluated only during checkout or subscription creation

This option is commonly used to:

  • Attract new customers
  • Run acquisition campaigns
  • Avoid modifying active subscriber pricing

Existing Subscriptions

In this scenario:

  • The promotion is propagated to existing subscriptions
  • Active subscribers receive the promotional price
  • The promotion is applied in upcoming billing cycles

This option is useful for:

  • Retention campaigns
  • Loyalty rewards
  • Customer satisfaction initiatives

Configuration and Support

Both scenarios are supported by APIO, but the desired behavior must be explicitly configured.

To enable or change how a promotion applies to subscriptions, you must contact APIO Support so the correct policy can be set for your promotion.

Best Practices

  • Decide upfront whether a promotion should affect existing subscribers
  • Clearly communicate promotion impact to customers
  • Use existing-subscription promotions carefully to avoid billing confusion

APIO gives you the flexibility to manage promotions across subscription lifecycles while maintaining control and transparency.
